"Research in the area of multimedia communications has been advancing at an amazing speed in the past two decades. One consequence of these technology advances is the standardization of H.261/H.263, JPEG and the MPEG series, which have produced a number of very success-ful commercial products in the market. Digital TV, Internet videophone, Video CD, DVD, MP3 and broadcast HDTV are only a few of the well-known examples in our daily life. On the other hand, the standard activities in return also push the advances of research in this area. This multimedia communications group consists of 7 faculty members focusing mainly on the MPEG related subjects. In addition to individual research work, we jointly participate in the international MPEG standard activities. Therefore, in this selected publications, a separate chapter at the end is dedicated to our MPEG contributions. In this short introduction, we will summarize our work under 5 categories. "
